First Presbyterian Church Mission
First Presbyterian Church has a long history of supporting mission. Dr. Horace Allen was probably the first missionary to come from this congregation. He went as a medical missionary to Namdaemoon Presbyterian Church in Korea and his efforts there are credited with the start of Christianity in that country. Three delegates from FPC were invited in the fall of 2007 to attend the 120th anniversary of the ….. In Seoul Korea
Members from this congregation have served actively in the Peace Corps, Thailand, Pakistan, Korea, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Bolivia, Mexico. We have been in a sister church relationship with the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Somoto Nicaragua for a number of years, sharing visits back and forth.
Mission is vital to who we are at FPC and Presbyterians can be found locally supporting, Habitat for Humanity, People in Need, Helpline, Hospice, Global Village, Grady Hospital, CROP walk, Christmas Child program, the Free Store and so much more.
The newly redesigned mission committee has begun the new S.O.S. (Service on Saturday) program which meets the 2nd Saturday of the month from 9am-12pm. This group which changes month to month includes members from the committee and the congregation. Their purpose is to set out into the community helping people, wash windows, weed garden beds, rake leaves, clean out gutters, change light bulbs, clean lawn furniture, make small repairs, paint, move furniture and more. No project it too small. So far this has been a very successful endeavor. `
On the fourth Thursday of the month FPC offers a free meal for anyone in the community. This meal joins five others in the community which seek to make sure no one goes hungry.
The new shoebox ministry is in its infancy. This project is intended to make available to the homeless, transient and those in need, a box filled with hygiene necessities. 50 have already been distributed and with 50 to be assembled.
Much is happening at FPC in the area of mission. The goal of the members and friends of this congregation is to show our love for God and our neighbor in all we do. In response to the question in Micah 6:8 "What does the Lord require of you? We seek to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with our God". Won’t you join us?
